It’s Official!

Congratulations to Barack Obama! What a historic and exciting race this has been. It’s too bad that Al Gore didn’t fight as hard as Hillary. Bush would have lost the election back in 2000 and the world would be a better place today. But that didn’t happen and we have a lot of work to do in order to get our country back on track.

Now it’s time for the democratic party to come together behind our nominee Barack Obama. While I’ve been a Hillary supporter, the fact is that there is little difference between these two candidates and where they stand on the important issues facing our country today. However, the differences between Obama and McCain – and the two parties – are immense. And so, it’s an easy call for democrats to back Obama in the general election. On to victory in November and a new beginning for the United States of America!

Why I think high gas prices are good

The higher the better, because it’s the only way that Americans will wake up to the problems facing our planet today and the only way we will put time and money into alternative energy sources. We are in for more hard times here in the US if we don’t do something now. We are addicted to oil and what oil is left on the planet is getting harder and more expensive to get at; not to mention our dependence on the Middle East where they currently have more oil than other parts of the world. Remember the gas crisis in the 1970’s? That is when we used up much of the easy to mine oil here in the US. Jimmy Carter told us to conserve, but we didn’t listen. We should have begun research back in the 70’s, since research and implementation can take decades.

We need to act now with urgency and that doesn’t mean screwing up the environment more by drilling in Alaska, it means finding clean renewable alternatives.

It does make a difference

“he’s a politician………….RIGHT!
they’re ALL assholes…….
I dont know why people get so pationate about putting a certain politician in office….they dont care about us…..only their pocketbooks……this guy is scum just like the rest of em…… ”
Flickr photo and comment

This is a comment/quote from a flickr friend and an all too common attitude. I will agree that politicians often have some of the same traits. They like power and they tell you what you want to hear. Or at least they sugar-coat issues in order to get elected. They have to do this because the average American voter is an idiot. If a politician told the whole truth, he/she would never get elected.

That said, there are fundamental differences between the two parties. So, while I agree, the person elected doesn’t make much difference, however where they stand on the important issues and whether or not they have the backing of the house and senate does make a difference.

People who make statements like this are usually independent “average” Americans. And so it is true that who is in the white house will have little impact on their lives. However, for people who are in need or are discriminated against, politics can make a huge difference in their lives and this is why we are passionate about politics.

Generally speaking, Republicans want low taxes and small government. This sounds fine and dandy unless you happen to be poor, elderly or disabled. Republicans tend to favor big business, while Democrats favor people. Having the democrats in control can literally mean the difference between my children living happily in their home community and having a miserable existence in an institution. The trickle-down effects of having the Republicans in control for 6 years has been devastating to the disability community, not to mention a whole lot of other things they have screwed up.

Voting Republican for a person with a disability is like shooting yourself in the foot. So, if you feel like this flickr friend, and you really think it makes no difference who gets elected. Please do me a favor and vote for a democrat. Any democrat would be better than any republican.

Remember, we are all just an accident or illness away from a disability.

2 down 48 to go…

The ban on same-sex marriages was struck down today in California, as California joins Massachusetts in upholding the civil rights of its citizens. It’s only a matter of time before all states come to the same conclusion, since it is clearly unconstitutional to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation. California made the right decision today when you understand two simple things:

1. separation of church and state
2. separate is not equal

Mixed feelings…

I support Hillary Clinton, because I think she is the best person for the job. But I have to admit I’m worried. If Hillary wins the nomination, will this discourage and alienate Obama supporters. Many Obama supporters are young first-time voters. Will they be disillusioned if Obama should lose. Personally, I like both Hillary and Barack and would support just about any Democrat, as long as the Republicans lose. But if this fight between Clinton and Obama leads to a win for McCain…I don’t even want to think about it. I’m finally getting over my depression from the 2004 election, ugggg.
