Pearl Harbor Day

A little piece of family history on this Pearl Harbor Day 2021. Today marks the 80th anniversary of the Japanese attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor. This is a page from my great grandfather Joseph Winterkorn’s ‘Ledger’ as he called it. This is where he documented his finances and important events in his life. I received a copy of this ledger several years ago from my Uncle Arthur who lived in Hawaii and worked for the Pearl Harbor port authority.

Greatest news that ever came after days of worry about the fate of our dear son Arthur in the far away Hawaiian Islands, where on the morning of Dec 7th 1941 the treacherous forces of Japan swept over Pearl Harbor causing destruction of life and property to the unsuspecting inhabitants, was a telegram received here on the night of Dec 13, 1941 at 11:15 saying:
“Alls well. love Arthur Winterkorn”
Indescribable are the feelings which those few words carried to us all.
He left the home for those far away lands on the 6th of August 1941 with so much hope and ambition to prepare himself for a better future in life.
Fate grant him life and success.
Written Dec 14th 1941.

Joseph Winterkorn, 1941

No Krampus This Year

By Andrew St. George

Local Detective Leonard Keaton is credited with taking down crime lord Lloyd “Krampus” Christmas. The super villain, named by his parents after Jim Carey’s Character in “Dumb and Dumber,” has been on a crusade against Christmas since a young age. Earning the nickname of “Grinch” in his youth, it wasn’t until Christmas reached the age of 18 when the violent opposition to Christmas really took hold, and the acts of atrocity performed promoted him from the “Grinch” to “Krampus” or the “Christmas Devil.”

Christmas was behind the recent kidnapping of beloved hero Rudolph, or Rudy as his friends called him. Rudy was reported missing shortly after thanksgiving. Mr. Cringle, Rudy’s employer, stated that there was almost no way to safely navigate the treacherous trip from the North Pole without the luminescent qualities of Rudy’s famous nose. “He really was the shining light of our team” Cringle said, having to pause for a moment to contain a slight chuckle that made his belly jiggle.

The plot hatched by the evil “Krampus” essentially revolved around selling off Rudy to the highest bidder, a Chinese genetics laboratory, who intended to kill and dissect Rudy’s nose to study its bioluminescent qualities. Their intent is still currently unclear, and they refused to comment, but it is widely believed that they were looking to use the bio-tech to develop some form of light bulb for vehicles. Arthur Johnson, head scientist at BioDynamic Conglomerates, believes that the idea is technically feasible, but believes that the technology would only be slightly better that what was on the market currently.

Detective Keaton was at the airport preparing for a much needed vacation when he smelled something askew in a crate that was being packed on the plane. Pulling rank on the baggage handlers, he pried the crate open to find Rudy tied up inside with a bag over his nose to contain the glow. Using his keen detective skills, he looked at the return shipping address on the crate and recognized it as the home of Lloyd Christmas. Calling in a favor, he got a warrant issued and went to search the house and found evidence of Rudy being there, as well as a document titled “My plan to kidnap and sell Rudolph to the Chinese by Lloyd “Krampus” Christmas.” Using this evidence, Leonard arrested Christmas.

I interviewed Detective Keaton in his office, and he had this to say: “Did I save Christmas? Of course I did.”

In The Blue

Aaron’s Ball Python ‘Carl’ is getting ready to shed. You can tell he is going to shed because his eyes have turn cloudy with a bluish color. His skin coloring is also pale and not as brightly colored as usual.

Snakes shed as the grow. They shed their old skin and it’s replaced by new skin. Younger snakes will shed more often than older snakes because they are growing faster. We leave Carl alone at this time, because he can be nervous due to being unable to see.

‘A’ Week

‘A’ Week: 20-26 March 2011. Raising awareness of how many are ‘Good without God’.

The idea of ‘A’ Week is simple – to raise awareness of how many people are ‘Good without God’ and don’t need religion to influence their lives.

You take part by changing your Facebook profile picture to the ‘A’ for one week.

This year ‘A’ Week runs over the March Equinox from 20-26 March 2011. If just a handful of people were to change their profile pictures almost no one would notice – but with many thousands taking part, and using the same ‘A’ at the same time, it gets noticed all over the world.

‘A’ Week is not about being disrespectful to religion or people who have religious views, it’s about quietly showing that there are more people than may be realized who are ‘Good without God’ and who don’t need religion to influence their lives.

“How’d the Moon Get There?”

The moon was formed after a Mars-sized object smashed into Earth over four and a half billion years ago. This collision caused material from both Earth and the colliding object to be thrown into orbit around Earth. This material eventually gathered together to form the Moon.

Bill O’Reilly tried to prove the existence of God with the now famous line, “the tides go in, the tides go out”. Now he has made himself look even more foolish trying to explain his way out of this ignorant statement.

The fact is that since the beginning of human history, people have created gods to explain things that they don’t understand. Naturally, the first god was the Sun God, since the sun gave light and life. Some cultures had many different gods for all sorts of things. Today, most religions worship a single god, but the premise is no different than it was in ancient times. We still use gods as gap fillers for things we don’t understand, which is exactly what O’Rielly is trying to do here – and with such arrogance. I don’t know how that happened, therefore it happened magically.

The more we learn about life, our world, our universe and beyond, the less we will need gods. How did we get here? Was it luck or was it a magical, invisible sky daddy? How about the Flying Spaghetti Monster?
