evolution

Rick Perry: he’s not smart enough to figure out which one is right.

And he’s running for President.

“How old do I think the earth is? You know what? I don’t have any idea. I know it’s pretty old, so it goes back a long, long way. I’m not sure anybody actually knows completely and absolutely how long, how old the earth is. I hear your mom was asking about evolution. You know, it’s a theory that’s out there. It’s got some gaps in it, but in Texas we teach both creationism and evolution in our public schools, because I figured you’re smart enough to figure out which one is right.”

Why Don’t Bees Go to Heaven?

Why Don’t Bees Go to Heaven?
by Ronnie Williams

It seems to me the species Homo sapiens,
carries the chutzpah gene.
To think they are the purpose of the universe
when they only just arrived on the scene.

What’s even worse, they bare a curse
of believing they’re the only form of life.
To never die, and go on living
somewhere high up in the sky.

So why don’t bees go to heaven?
and trees go to heaven?
amoeba, krill and fleas go to heaven?
It’s not surprisin’ that they’re not arisin’
’cause man created god.

this grain of sand upon an infinite beach
had been supporting life for trillions of spins
then along came humans, who started assumin’
that this was where it begins

so profoundly naïve, they began to believe
these primates were the only ones
to never die, and go on living
somewhere high up in the sky

so why don’t worms go to heaven?
and germs go to heaven?
spiders, snakes and sperms go to heaven?
its quite expected that they’re not resurrected
’cause man created god

if man created Zeus, and the god of The Sun
if man created Shiva, and the god of Abraham
from all of life, why should the only one saved
be the species worst behaved?

well, that’s because
that same species, Homo sapiens
carries the chutzpah gene
to think they are the purpose of the universe
when they only just arrived on the scene

what’s even worse, they bare a curse
of believing they’re the only form of life
to never die, and go on living
somewhere high up in the sky

so why don’t whales go to heaven?
and snails go to heaven?
orangutans and quail go to heaven?
they don’t think twice about paradise
because man created god

so why don’t bees go to heaven?

Meet Ardi

Ardipithecus ramidus

Ardi was a 110-pound, 4-foot female who’s fossil remains were found in Ethiopia. She is an early member of the human family tree that lived 4.4 million years ago, more than 1 million years earlier than Lucy. This is a truly amazing discovery that will add a treasure trove of information to our knowledge of human evolution.

Ardi has surprised scientists with many traits which do not appear in living African apes or in humans. Most surprising, scientist did not expect such an old human ancestor to walk upright. They expected them to be more of a knuckle walker like a chimpanzee. Ardi shows that humans and apes evolved quite differently from their common ancestor of about 6 or 7 million years ago.

Weird that this discovery was announced the same day I mentioned Lucy in my previous post about “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds”. Although the discovery of Ardi was officially announced on Oct 1st, the research has been going on for many years and involved 47 scientists from 10 different countries.

It will be interesting to see what the creationists have to say about Ardi.

Happy 200th Birthday!

Charles Darwin was born 200 years ago today. Yet many Americans do not believe in evolution. Really, it is not a question of believing, it’s more a question of understanding. What many people don’t understand is that evolution is a FACT. It happened and is happening now. Darwin’s “theory” of evolution is simply the best explanation we have at this time.

Steven Jay Gould explained that evolution is both a fact and a theory. “And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world’s data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts do not go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein’s theory of gravitation replaced Newton’s, but apples did not suspend themselves in mid-air, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from apelike ancestors whether they did so by Darwin’s proposed mechanism or by some other, yet to be discovered.”

So while we can debate a theory, the facts are indisputable. Yet a scary percentage of Americans still deny the basic fact of evolution.

Chart source, National Geographic News

This chart depicts the public acceptance of evolution theory in 34 countries in 2005. Adults were asked to respond to the statement: “Human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals.” The percentage of respondents who believed this to be true is marked in blue; those who believed it to be false, in red; and those who were not sure, in yellow.

This is not a true or false question folks! The human brain is evolving way too slowly in some people!
