Molly the Giraffe

Molly (Tufts University photo)

Molly the Giraffe is big news in our small town. Molly was born at nearby Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts on February 23, 2009. Molly’s mother Mauzy was not producing enough milk, so Molly was transferred to Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s Hospital for Large Animals here in Grafton, where she was nursed back to health. Our small town’s tall tale made it all the way to national television when Molly appeared on NBC’s Today Show.

On March, Molly returned home to Southwick Zoo. She has grown about a foot and is now over 5 feet tall and has gained 20 lbs! She is doing great and is very active. She practices walking and galloping. I’m looking forward to meeting Molly when the zoo reopens this spring.

Seizures and CP

Eric had his first seizure yesterday at school. As many as half of kids with cerebral palsy (CP) have seizure disorders. I was optimistic and hoping that we would avoid this complication with Eric. So, although it’s not all that surprising, it is disappointing. I got a call from the school around noon-time that Eric had seizure activity that lasted about 3 minutes. He also turned blue and stopped breathing for several seconds; common with a seizure, but still very scary.

He was taken to UMass Worcester via ambulance where they started an IV and did a bunch of lab work. Once in the ER, Eric fell asleep, which is unusual for Eric, but again common after a seizure. The doctor also ordered a CAT scan. We ended up spending 7 hours in the ER, most of that time was just waiting to have the CAT scan. Every time Eric would get to the top of the list, a trauma case would bump him. Finally, his nurse decided to take him upstairs to in-patient radiology for the scan. All things considered, Eric was on his best behavior at the hospital, but I knew there was no way he would stay still for a CAT scan. So, they gave him Versed IV for the scan.

His labs were all normal and the CAT scan showed enlargement of the ventricular system, which is Eric’s base-line, but no other abnormalities. So the plan is to follow-up with Eric’s pediatrician and see a neurologist. He will need to have an EEG (electroencephalogram) and probably start on seizure medication. It is possible that this was an isolated episode, although I’m not getting my hopes up, since seizures are so common for kids with CP. I’ve also read that sometimes puberty can bring on seizures for kids with neurological problems who were seizure-free before puberty. So, one more diagnosis to add to the list…

We finally got out of the ER at 9pm last night. I will keep Eric home from school today and watch him. Here are a couple of camera phone photos taken at the hospital.

MVB?

I’ll spare you my excuses as to why I even stopped at Burger King, but I picked up some chicken tenders for Eric on the way home from a meeting. As I was helping him eat, I happened to read the message on the bag.

Who writes this stuff? Did Burger King actually pay someone to come up with this Most Valuable Bag idea?

I suppose the fact that it got my attention means that the advertising is effective, but the slogan is as crappy as the food inside.

Twitter Etiquette

So, I’ve been using Twitter for a month or so and I’m enjoying the service. What I like most about Twitter is that my tweets are set up to automatically post to my Facebook profile page and also to this blog (See “Cindy’s Brain Farts” in the right column).

Now that I’ve been on Twitter for a while, I’m starting to get a fair amount of followers. So, what do I do, follow everyone who follows me? If I don’t follow someone who follows me, is that considered rude? I did a search for Twitter Etiquette and could not find a consensus on this. So what I’m doing now is if I get a follow notice, I’ll check out the users profile page to be sure they are not spammers. Then I take a look at some of their tweets and if I don’t find anything objectionable, I will follow them. Of course I don’t have time to follow every tweet and I don’t have tweets coming to my phone. I just have a twitter gadget on my portal page and I browse that frequently.

Anyway, while I was searching for Twitter Etiquette, I found this really cool photo and article. I love the way the avatars are pasted onto the people. I especially like the default avatar lady, LOL! The article also has some useful Twitter tips.
