Why I think high gas prices are good

The higher the better, because it’s the only way that Americans will wake up to the problems facing our planet today and the only way we will put time and money into alternative energy sources. We are in for more hard times here in the US if we don’t do something now. We are addicted to oil and what oil is left on the planet is getting harder and more expensive to get at; not to mention our dependence on the Middle East where they currently have more oil than other parts of the world. Remember the gas crisis in the 1970’s? That is when we used up much of the easy to mine oil here in the US. Jimmy Carter told us to conserve, but we didn’t listen. We should have begun research back in the 70’s, since research and implementation can take decades.

We need to act now with urgency and that doesn’t mean screwing up the environment more by drilling in Alaska, it means finding clean renewable alternatives.

It does make a difference

“he’s a politician………….RIGHT!
they’re ALL assholes…….
I dont know why people get so pationate about putting a certain politician in office….they dont care about us…..only their pocketbooks……this guy is scum just like the rest of em…… ”
Flickr photo and comment

This is a comment/quote from a flickr friend and an all too common attitude. I will agree that politicians often have some of the same traits. They like power and they tell you what you want to hear. Or at least they sugar-coat issues in order to get elected. They have to do this because the average American voter is an idiot. If a politician told the whole truth, he/she would never get elected.

That said, there are fundamental differences between the two parties. So, while I agree, the person elected doesn’t make much difference, however where they stand on the important issues and whether or not they have the backing of the house and senate does make a difference.

People who make statements like this are usually independent “average” Americans. And so it is true that who is in the white house will have little impact on their lives. However, for people who are in need or are discriminated against, politics can make a huge difference in their lives and this is why we are passionate about politics.

Generally speaking, Republicans want low taxes and small government. This sounds fine and dandy unless you happen to be poor, elderly or disabled. Republicans tend to favor big business, while Democrats favor people. Having the democrats in control can literally mean the difference between my children living happily in their home community and having a miserable existence in an institution. The trickle-down effects of having the Republicans in control for 6 years has been devastating to the disability community, not to mention a whole lot of other things they have screwed up.

Voting Republican for a person with a disability is like shooting yourself in the foot. So, if you feel like this flickr friend, and you really think it makes no difference who gets elected. Please do me a favor and vote for a democrat. Any democrat would be better than any republican.

Remember, we are all just an accident or illness away from a disability.

2 down 48 to go…

The ban on same-sex marriages was struck down today in California, as California joins Massachusetts in upholding the civil rights of its citizens. It’s only a matter of time before all states come to the same conclusion, since it is clearly unconstitutional to discriminate against people based on their sexual orientation. California made the right decision today when you understand two simple things:

1. separation of church and state
2. separate is not equal

Mixed feelings…

I support Hillary Clinton, because I think she is the best person for the job. But I have to admit I’m worried. If Hillary wins the nomination, will this discourage and alienate Obama supporters. Many Obama supporters are young first-time voters. Will they be disillusioned if Obama should lose. Personally, I like both Hillary and Barack and would support just about any Democrat, as long as the Republicans lose. But if this fight between Clinton and Obama leads to a win for McCain…I don’t even want to think about it. I’m finally getting over my depression from the 2004 election, ugggg.

Teach your children well

Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints polygamist ranch in Texas

Are you surprised, or perhaps even outraged by this story? While extreme, this is basically one of many examples of the religious brainwashing that our young are subjected to on a regular basis. Children by nature trust their parents. What children are taught at an early age stays with them for life. It is impossible for a young child to make a judgment regarding faith. They are too young to understand these supernatural ideas. Therefore, it is not possible for a child to be a Christian, a Jew, a Muslim or whatever their parents happen to be. When parents force their superstitious beliefs upon their children, this is a form of brainwashing.

Religion is like a virus that infects the majority of the world’s population and we are passing this infection on to our children. It teaches them to believe in things that can not be tested or proven and in reality is superstitious nonsense. Religion is like an infection of the masses that continues to spread generation after generation. It’s a virus that causes delusions of the ultimate imaginary friend.

Why is this bad? Because it teaches children not to think. Religion teaches them ancient superstitious beliefs, rather than facts and it is a slippery slope that often leads to segregation, bigotry and hatred. Religion is a destructive force that has caused anger and bloodshed throughout human history. “My God is better than your God” or who’s imaginary friend is the real God? In reality, there are no gods. For those who are able to think – in spite of childhood brainwashing and social pressures – it is clear that believing in an invisible friend up in the sky is just ridiculous. Also, religion is not necessary in order to give children a moral foundation. We should practice “the golden rule” because it’s the right thing to do, not out of the fear of God or Hell’s fire.

If world peace can ever be possible, we must break this cycle and stop brainwashing our young. Children should be taught facts, not superstitions, so that they can grow up to be open-minded, thinking adults who are able to form their own objective opinions. Their is a difference between teaching a child about the religions of the world and scaring a child into thinking they are going to burn in hell if they don’t believe in whatever particular god their parents worship. They should be taught history, science, literature, mathematics and most importantly critical thinking.

It’s time for free thinkers to step forward and say, enough is a enough. In order to become a global community, we need to move beyond these ancient myths and taboos; we have plenty of real-world differences and problems to overcome. Once a child has been infected with the god virus, it is almost impossible to cure them. As always, prevention is the best medicine.

Imagine

Imagine there’s no Heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one
